The Great Weekend Adventure
I feel like I’ve been a bit of a slug lately. I started strong this summer with some regular running and walking, anywhere from 1-3 miles with or without the dog and usually a neighbor or two. I missed some runs here and there, and soon enough found myself reading lots of books and lounging around. But! Back to movement!
On Sunday morning, I got out of bed right away when I heard the beeping at 4:45 a.m. I knew everything was ready to go - I checked my bike, poorly neglected since the early spring when I last rode it…to the bar, no less and had all the gears cleaned and tires pumped; my bike rack was put back together and on my car; my clothes were folded up in front of my closet door, waiting to be put on. Okay, that last part was a little bit of a lie. When I went to bed, I slept in my running shorts and sports bra.
One of my neighbors is training for the Philly Distance Run, a half marathon, and wanted to run the course but needed a partner in crime to hit the streets with in the early morning. Enter into the picture me and my bike. While he ran, I rode. Jesus, is Philadelphia a peaceful city that early in the morning. As we made our way through the guts of the city, I was in awe of some places I still hadn’t seen in my two years of living here. Surprisingly, I didn’t wake any of the dozens of sleeping bums with my excitement and curiosity as I passed all of these previously unseen city treasures (umm, the buildings, not the bums).
We finished the course in about 2.5 hours, and I probably rode about 15 miles counting the times I circled back to deliver water to the thirsty runner. Movement feels awesome. Looking forward to the next ride!
